They tore their clothes
Just a thought that the custom to do keriya before burial (or in the case of a avel who can't attend - to tear upon hearing news ) could be connected to this same concept of ripping the emotional clothes away to reveal the raw state of pain and anguish in the heart of the mourner at the loss of a loved karov
meaning it is more than just a wanton act of destruction giving vent to the terrible pain of the loss - which God sanctions and allows despite the usual issur Baal tashchis
if that were the only meaning then why year clothes one can destroy many things
Clothes cover and protect us from the elements and emotions too can protect us or we can become numbed to the truth of a situation
so we tear those superficial coverings to reveal the reality of death at that moment pre kevurah
Only By facing the truth of the reality can we become to emotionally and spiritually heal from it
just a thought based on what rabbi yy said re yehoshuah and Calev tearing the clothes from the meraglim (acc to kotzker rebbe)
