Question :  how does this teaching connect with the Rambam's description of loving Hashem, "crazy like a man who can't stop thinking about a woman"?

It seems to me that that is very much about the subjective experience!  And quite an exalted level.

This mimer seems to directing us to surrender the experience, and simply to focus on "what does Hashem want me to do?"

If there was nothing to worry about in the midbar

Then why did Aaron have to make peace between people, between spouses, etc.?

The miraglim didn't want to enter EY from high sensitivity

But, it was THEIR high sensitivity.  It was still yeysh. Higher than high personal sensitivity is to do what HE wants regardless of your personal subjective sensitivities.

Of course, both passion and the technical mitzvah details

Are BOTH necessary. But ...if push comes to shove, and only one can be had, better to do the technical mitzvah without passion than be passionate but not do the mitzvah itself.

That explains putting on tefillin on someone who has no clue what they are, who actually isn't interested and who is just doing you a favor.
