This text-based class, in Likkutei Sichos vol. 20 Yud Yes Kislev, explains the dual function of Chassidus, described both as coal and pearls. Coal is found in the earth; pearls in the sea. Coal are vital for life; pearls are luxury. For one, Chassidus presented a depth and sophisticated to Judaism that would allow it to withstand the onslaught of modernity in all of its manifestations. In addition, Chassidus introduced a new consciousness as a foretaste of the times of Moshiach.
