Knock Out His Teeth?!

The Debate Between the King and Queen on How to Deal with the Rebellious Child

1 hr 58 min

Class Summary:

This shuir was presented on 6 Nissan, 5777, April 2, 2017, at Bais Torah U'Tefilah, in Passaic, NJ.

Knock out his teeth? The debate between the King and Queen on how to deal with the rebellious child.

The class explores the famous question of the Minchas Chinuch (By Rabbi Yosef Bavad), if the mitzvah the eliminate chametz before Pesach is fulfilled through the active action of destroying chametz, or perhaps via the passive reality of not having chametz. The class discusses the ramifications of this in Halacha, and then explains both perspectives from a spiritual point of view. The two views represent two paths in the service of G-d. Why, according to some, do I have to purchase chametz to fulfill the Mitzvah of destroying It? Do I have to struggle in order to serve G-d? Why can we fulfill the mitzvah of matzah only via grain that is vulnerable to become chametz?

We explore the strange episode in Gemarah Pesachim and Keresus about a debate between kind and queen if goat meat is superior to sheep or conversely. We explore the strange story of Yaakov and Eisav attracting the love of their father vs. their mother, and we show the unique approach of the Haggadah to the “wicked child.”
