Brilliant shiur. Just wondering how the pshat of the son of Rav Chaim Vital and that of the Baal haTanya fit in with Chazal who call the meraglim rashayim? Mistaken maybe, even sinners as the title of the shiur suggests. But rashayim?

the breaking of the tablets Moses followed his heart, as stated, and he was a holy man. Now he knew that by following his heart, as he was privy to the deepest secrets as God communicated to him, that this was what he was supposed to do. Yes, surely we can read this story on many levels, and this is God's intent. Even there is a joke: that Moses was the first to break the commandments. Now I know God also has a sense of humor, call it the comic within the cosmic.
This is very much an act that is about Tikkun Olam, the gathering of the sparks, from the one, many parts. One soul, diversity in many souls. What we are doing is communicating with each other, and deeply, the paradox is that it is divinity communicating with divinity. I KNOW this, but it is hard to explicate and I wonder if people get this. We are all of us filtering the light according to God's plan.
Any potter knows that when we fix a broken piece of pottery, sometimes, it's stronger in the broken parts. People who pass through the fire, who suffer, often gain get strengths and insights in passing through.
There are deep metaphoric connects running up and down all of our lives. They all, do, hold water.
And vessels, or pieces of pottery, as in vases, are metaphoric in mystic Judaism for all of us. We give, we receive, we dry up, we pitch as in ideas. What is a pitcher but a vessel for pouring? Also a person who lets fly, the ball. Sometimes we catch, and other times we are not quite on the ball!
There is something so beautiful wherever I look and it is a One ness that is surpassingly beautiful.
Awe Moses,. your name rhymes in English, with "roses". And roses, are "read".

Linking classes I think we have to connect it with the theme of the class presented here last week Behaaloscha: power dies, influence does not die. Yehousha thought Moshe can die, as per the words of Eldad and Meidad; the truth is that Mosehe does not die, because since his ultimate desire is that all the people become prophets, it is not about himself but about his empowerment of them, hence, he does not die as long as the influence remains.
A Rebbe may build empires of power, but they are there only for influence. Hence, even when he physically dies, his true reality remains.
moshe would not enter into the Land, but he also never really dies. till today we have Moshe with us. every day. every hour. the spies saw only one dimension, not the other.

Thank you I've learned and more importantly taught the Story of the Spies many time, always going through new commentators. You, however, Rabbi Jacobson, wove a new story, a fascinating, poetic one. How difficult it is to love someone, on the terms of the beloved and not the terms of the lover. I understand, in my limited way, how the meraglim felt. There's a stubborness in wanting things my way, even if the one I love would like something different. And what a lesson in worshipping G-d. That too has to be on His terms, not the conditions I like, and they often conflict. As always, thank you to David and Eda Schottenstein for your generosity in promulgating these shiurim.

response to yochanan I'm about to listen to the shiur, so maybe this was covered, but my understanding from when I learned this in school was that although Moshe "sent" them, the real shlichim WERE bnei yisrael. they were the ones who really wanted the mission in the first place. and in this case, the meraglim indeed were unified with their masters, the bnei yisrael.

to YG A shliach is capable of being "kemoso," one with the one who sends him. But for that he must choose to remain a shliach, a messenger of him. the spies however changed the goal of their "shlechus," of their mission. Moses sent them to find out the best way to enter the land, they decided their mission was to find out if they can enter the land. at that m,oment they ceased to be shluchim.

Question Amazing Shiur, Yasher Koach. However, there seems to be an inconsistency, at least from the way I understand the matter at hand. The Spies were messengers, we established that a messenger unlike a local employee is unified with his master whereas the local employee is working solely for their pay that comes at the end of a days or weeks work. Therefore it would seem that the spies should have conformed with the will of Moshe when in fact their conduct was the opposite?
