Thank you Rabbi Jacobson! Such a pleasure to see Neuroscience explained through the lens of Chassidus.
Yes, the ratson is the pulsion the sets us into motion. Neuroscience differentiates between emotions and sentiments.
E-motions are the énergies (e) that put us into motion. We can then lengthen it by mentalizing it (senti+ment) and it will create emotive states which are middos.
Ratson is who i really am and is rooted in what i intrinsically desire (taanug). Beautiful to see you bringing up these concepts!

מה שבאמת מעצב את המידות שלנו זה מההורים אבא ואמא או בצורה ישירה או בעקיפה לא סתם אומרים התפוח לא נופל רחוק מהעץ ולכן ענין מוחין לא פשוט לא במבט חיובי לא במבט שלילי שאז ממש קשה ובמיוחד אם אתה לא לומד חסידות ותניא אז לא מודעים לזה

Reverse engineering occurs when someone takes a finished
Piece of technology and figures out how it was made. The Chinese take a high tech American product, takes it apart to see what it consists of and how its put together. Ditto for corporate competition. Etc
We are given 2 finished high tech products. One is the world around us. When we reverse engineer the world its called science.
The second is the high tech (i.e. complicated( human being. When we reverse engineer the human it's called psychology and chassidus

Without work on our "ratzon" or primal drives to align with Hashems what is the point of anything?

Just by noticing the primal drive as you put it when they create negative emotions can effect the visceral reactions. This is the whole point of real healing. Please explain why you say this ratzon, this drive can not affect lower manifestations for the better.

Primal drive begats thoughts which begats emotions
The farmer has a primal drive to continue to live which necessitates food. This leads to planting seeds which correspond to thoughts. These thoughts leads to the food which grows (emotions).

These exist for us humans
They also exist for Hashem
His primal drive was to create a home below
His thoughts went back and forth: create the world, don't create the world, sustain the world and the yidden, destroy the world and the yidden, etc
His middos were His alternating between chesed and gevurah reacting to the conduct of man (Adam, the flood, Abraham's and Moshe's pleas to spare everyone) etc
