The “Litvishe" Sicha of the Lubavitcher Rebbe

Why Did Yaakov Ask Yehuda, Not Yosef, to Build the Yeshiva in Goshen?

1 hr 39 min

Class Summary:

This is a text-based class in Likkkutei Sichos vol. 3 Parshas Vayigash. It is a Sicha (address) presented by the Lubavitcher Rebbe on Shabbos Parshas Miketz, 5722, (December 9, 1961), and was taught by Rabbi YY Jacobson on Thursday, Parshas Vayigash, 9 Tevet, 5781, December 24, 2020, streaming live from Rabbi Jacobson's home in Monsey, NY.

The class explores the question of why did Yaakov ask Yehuda, not Yosef, to build the Yeshiva in Goshen? The Jew lives in a material world, but his roots are planted in the soil of unadulterated spirituality. In his daily life, the Jew must often be a Yosef, but his education must be provided by a Yehuda.

Yehuda chosen to set up the yeshiva

But, wasn't he involved in business dealings outside the family and  sheparding when he eventually got involved with Tamar?

If the highest ideal is to sit and learn without distractions or responsibilities

Why don't we see Lubavitch married men (the mitzvah to marry trumps the desire to just sit and learn while single); sitting in Kollel supported for a lifetime as is the ideal elsewhere?

    rambam az 1:3

Soon after a bocher marries his mind is distracted by responsibility

Even if he is supported financially.

Logically then one could say better to lead a sequestered secluded cloistered life cleaving to Hashem without distractions and never marry like certain other religions do!

Or. Is it the case that to marry and raise a family is Dorita and to remain undistracted is praiseworthy but lower than a dorita and  similar to the case where Yakov's promise to marry Rochel trumped the then not yet binding prohibition against marrying 2 sisters?

    rambam end tumas tzaraas

Yosef told the shvatim al tirgezu baderech - after the whole experience they went through you would think that might be part of the conversation of the events that happened to them etc. - BY the shvatim that torah is their craft the only concern was not to learn too in depth, but yosef was sure he had no doubt that nothing else besides torah would be the topic of conversation

When a yid is learning Torah he is aligned with Hashem

    Nothing better.

But, for those who are streaming this shiur right now live in Eretz Yisrael, they must stop, and log  off because its shkia.

Can it be that as great as learning is that it can and must stop because a certain yid was OTD millenia ago and led others astray?

Yosef could be totally involved in the world but still remain attached to Hashem

Can you say that whereas most frum yidden couldn't last if they went to a place entire void of yiddishkeit  but shluchim can go, be the only  frum couple in that place, and still remain attached? And moreso,  not only REMAIN frum but actually TRANSFORM  the yidden (and nonjews) in that place?

Did the nascent nation of yidden in Mitzrayim for the hundreds of  years after Yakov and Yosef not only grow into a nation from internal growth despite eventual oppression by Pharaoh, but were even  able to transform enough nonjews over time such that many joined the yidden when they eventually left? And they did do even while enslaved!

Set up the yeshiva before going there?

Did then Lubavitch knowingly set up online Torah learning (a modern yeshiva) 30 years ago, when many other frum groups shunned such technology (and many still do), long before most people were connected to the internet or even had a computer? I.e. set up an online yeshiva before the world shifted online?

Did the creators of theyeshiva.net and other such sites  do likewise, albeit unknowingly that Covid would   force people to retreat to their bunkers?

Must first set up a yeshiva before going

The Rebbe continued the pattern of the Friederkerer Rebbe and sent thousands of  shluchim, continuing unabated to this day.

These shluchim often go to places devoid of any yiddishkeit though there are yidden there (otherwise they wouldn't go). Where is the yeshiva built first before they go? Or is it true that the shaliach (and his wife) ARE the yeshiva in the sense of the fount of Torah knowledge?

    First set up a yeshiva

But aren't we told that a community must first build a mikva in a new place, and even sell a Seger Torah (the quintessence of a yeshiva) to build it?

"Yehuda, go first and set up a place of learning"

What happened to the yeshiva of  Shem and Ever? Why didn't Yakov just relocate that yeshiva? Were they abandoned when Yakov and his family moved to  Mitzrayim?

To be (in the world) or not to be (in the world)

"From Sara to Sarah, no one like...."

The Sicha extolls the virtues and paradigm of Yosef's in the world  mehalech (way) over that of his other worldly mehalech, and how he set the tone for later generations of yidden to survive,  even thrive, in golus.

As mentioned yesterday though, this, while necessary in times of golus,  such as Yosef's own time, and the ensuing golus Mitzrayim and the ones that followed, including our own last golus, his paradigm did not necessarily apply and was not necessary during times of geula such as  when the Beis Hamigdash stood.

This will also be true with the imminent Geula when working IN the world will be dramatically transformed with the nation's helping us serve Hashem as the Rambam ends off the Mishneh Torah.

The counterpoint to our sicha and demonstration that Yosef's paradigm, while necessary in Golus, will be superceded by Yehuda's (and the others) paradigm to serve Hadhem as shepherds, is found, appropriately in the Haftorah to Vayigash. The Novi Yecheskel describes the division of Klal Yisrael into 2 kingdoms, Yosef's and Yehuda's, (the 10-2 split) and then its reunification under Dovid, from Yehuda and the pre-eminence of Yehuda in the forthcoming and final Geula. Speedily in our days.

P.s. Rabbi, true that tonight we can eat but cannot learn and tomorrow,  we can learn but cannot eat? ;) GS

    Question from yesterday's class

A question or two about these teachings we are learning this week.Yosef, as you are teaching was able to live in Egyptian society and still be totally connected to Gd. Yaakov recognized Yosef's ability to do so. We are supposed to emulate this behavior, which I happen to agree with. The brothers "hated" Yosef for many reasons; one of the main ones being that they thought he was going against how Jews should live. They were more secluded and believed that's how we should live in order to be able to better connect with Gd. I get that too. So my question is, in the end I believe you have said in previous shiurim that we will go in the way of Yehuda, NOT of Yosef. So what's the lesson if Yosef's way is not the ultimate way?

To expand on the above, how does Dovid HaMelech fit into this picture? He comes from Yehuda (and Tamar), the one who with the 10 brothers led more secluded lives as shepherds away from the rest of the world, and yet Dovid lived in the world, was not secluded, and in a way was able to live in the world and still be connected to Gd like Yosef.
