I'll just add a similiar idea I once heard about a man realising that he might have been a mistake.
בפסוק כתוב שראובן אמר לאחיו לשים את יוסף בתוך הבור והכתוב מעיד שרצה להציל את יוסף, לאחמ"כ האחים מוכרים את יוסף, לאחר זמן ראובן חוזר וצועק יוסף איננו ואני אנא אני בא, והשאלה הפשוטה היא היכן היה ראובן בשעת המכירה , רש"י כבר עמד על כך והשיב ב' תירוצים א' היה זה זמנו לשמש את אביו וב' היה עסוק בשקו ותעניתו על מעשה בלהה, והקושיא מפורסמת מה היה עכשיו שראובן שב בתשובה על מעשה בלהה בזמן גורלי כזה עשה תשובה על מעשה שארע שנים רבות לפני כן,
ופשוט שאיננו יכולים להביע דעה במעשי האבות,אכן בשביל לקחת מוס לעצמינו שמעתי
אכן שמעתי שהרי ראובן היה סבור שיוסף לא מחוייב במיתה שהרי רצה להצילו, וכתוב במדרשים שהאחים הושיבו בי"ד לדון את יוסף ופסקו שמחויב מיתה והנה ראובןראה את כל זאת ונפעם מהכוח של נגיעה עד היכן היא מגעת שהשבטים פוסקים דינו של אדם זכאי למיתה מכוח נגיעתם שהטתה אותם,
ועד אותו זמן לא חזר ראובן בתשובה על מעשה בלהה שהיה סבור שהצד עמו וכמו שטען בשלמא אחות אמי צרה לאמי אבל שפחתה תהא צרה לאמי, אכן אחר שראה את כוח הנגיעה שוב אמר לעצמו ואולי גם אני לא הייתי צודק בשיקול דעתי וגם טעיתי מכוח הנגיעה וע"כ באותו זמן חזר בתשובה.
