Two Types of Leaders: Those Who See Crisis & Those Who See Opportunity

What Does it Take to Be a True Jewish Leader?

This class was presented Sunday morning, 27 Sivan 5776, July 3, 2016, at Or Chaim Shul in Monsey, NY. It is probably one of the seemingly most absurd statements in the Talmud: &ldquo;Moses heard and he fell on his face. What was the rumor Moses heard? Rabbi Shmuel the son of Nachmani said in the name of Rabbi Yonoson: He heard that they suspected him of having relations with a married woman.&rdquo;

But this seems insane, to say the least. Where did the Talmud get this from? The Torah merely states that Korach was challenging Moses&rsquo; leadership, not his fidelity? Furthermore, how could anybody take such a rumor seriously? How could Korach and his cronies spread such a ludicrous blood libel against the greatest prophet of all times, who gave the Jewish people all the laws against adultery and promiscuity, and about whom G-d said that &ldquo;he is loyal in my entire home?&rdquo;&nbsp;

The class explores five perspectives, three of them from the Maharal of Prague. From his first interpretation we discover that the Talmud was not offering a new story here; rather it was explaining the depth and sophistication behind Korach&rsquo;s mutiny. Korach&rsquo;s argument was not hollow and brute; it was profound, and hence managed to attract the hearts of 250 Jewish prominent men. His argument is not to be easily dismissed; it is a wise viewpoint that requires deliberation. The argument was this: Moses is disrupting a sacred marriage. The concept of a Moshe, of a &ldquo;Rebbe&rdquo; in Jewish life according to Korach, is corrupt and dangerous.

Eldad and Medad were prophesying Moses’ death. Joshua was outraged. Moses calmed him down saying, “If only all of G-d’s people would be prophets!” How did that calm the rage?"
Yet, when Korach challenged Moses’ authority saying, “The whole community is holy, and the Lord is with them, why then do you exalt yourself over the community of G-d?” Moses uses his power to eliminate the opposition.
What a contrast in responses! Joshua came to tell Moses that Eldad and Medad were 
prophesying in the camp, away from Moses and the seventy elders. Joshua regarded this as a dangerous threat to Moses’ leadership and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!” Moses’ reply is one of the most majestic in the whole of Torah: “Are you jealous for my sake? Would it be that all of G-d’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his spirit upon them!”
What was the difference between Eldad and Medad on the one hand, and Korach and his coconspirators on the other? What is the difference between Moses saying, “Would it be that all 
the G-d’s people were prophets,” and Korach’s claim that “The whole community is indeed 
holy”? Why was the first, but not the second, a legitimate sentiment?
There is a distinction here which goes to the very core of the two narratives. And it has to do with the fundamental difference between two modes of leadership: power and influence. Here we are being taught the difference between power and influence: Men of power can die; men of influence never die.

The story of the spies is well known. What is often overlooked is that this story is followed in the Torah by three narratives of rebellion&mdash;two in Shlach, the third in Korach. The implication behind the chronology of these events seems clear. All three scenes of mutiny were a response to the new and harsh reality of the nation destined to wander for four decades in the desert.

One group, the Maapilim, said: Let&rsquo;s go to the Promised Land with or without G-d. The second mutiny was a public violation of Shabbos&mdash;a public denial of G-d as Creator and of G-d&rsquo;s covenant with the people of Israel. The third mutiny was that of Korach, blaming Moses and his fierce leadership for all their problems.

The three uprisings are understandable. Frustrated by their reality, searching for a way out of the wilderness, they attempted to find alternatives. As the Jewish exile continued for so long, and our people felt trapped in a seemingly endless wilderness of anti-Semitism, pogroms, persecution, bigotry, and all forms of suffering&mdash;three divergent paths emerged in the Jewish world; Enlightenment and secularization, secular Zionism, and reforms and changes in the Jewish religion.

As these three volcanos were transforming the Jewish world, in the 19th and 20th century, a soul was born in a small city in the Ukraine. The year was 1902. At this point, it is estimated that half of the Jewish people have abandoned Jewish faith and practice in search for a newer, better future. Within two decades, the First World War and the Bolshevik revolution would change the map of Europe and the living conditions of millions of Jews. Within five decades, the Holocaust would wipe out a third of our people. Israel would be born.

Two years later, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, age 48, assumed the leadership of a small Chassidic group in Brooklyn. He took a long, hard and deep look at his world gone up in smoke and ashes on one hand, while confronting a deep spiritual crisis on the other hand. He set out on a courageous mission: to re-embrace and unify all segments of Klal Yisroel, of the Jewish people, and help redirect their course out of the wilderness of exile toward the Promised Land.

Korach relates the tragic story of the mutiny staged by a man named Korach (Numbers chapter 16), who organized a rebellion against Moses and Aaron, chosen by the Almighty to serve respectively as the Prophet and as the High Priest of Israel. The rabbis in the Midrash made a strange observation. &ldquo;Korah was clever,&rdquo; the rabbis declare, &ldquo;so why did he commit such a folly&rdquo;? What propelled the wise Korach to declare war against Moses and Aron.
&nbsp;Their question is intriguing. How did the rabbis know that Korach was clever? Never has this person or his wisdom been mentioned in the Torah before? Whence the certainty that Korach was a wise man? Perhaps he was a fool. The answer, of course, is that the rabbis discerned the wisdom of Korach from this very incident. The very mutiny of Korach against the authority of Moses and Aaron, demonstrates wisdom and perception. But why? On the surface, the mutiny seems to be a symptom of good old jealousy, of an unbridled ego craving power and fame.
The class explores dissects the deeper argument of Korach. &ldquo;The entire community is holy,&rdquo; argued Korach to Moses and Aaron in this week&rsquo;s portion, &ldquo;and G-d is within them. Why do you exalt yourselves above the community of G-d?&rdquo; These are powerful words. G-d is within each and every person. Why does anybody consider themselves spiritually superior to anybody else? Truth and holiness are imbedded in each and every soul; within every pulsating heart flows the cosmic energy, so why is Moses telling people what G-d want?&nbsp;
Where did Korach go wrong? We explore the nature of unity, diversity and leadership in Jewish thought. And why the story of Korach is alluded to in the word &ldquo;chatzaros,&rdquo; which means courtyards. The laws of making an Eiruv Chatzaros, combining all the homes in a courtyard, captures the essence of Korach&rsquo;s error and the meaning of true leadership.&nbsp;
