Dedicated by Sammy and Laurie Friedland, in loving memory of their parents, Chaim Meir ben Shlomo Zalman Friedland, and Shayna Rachel bas Dovid Eliezer Simon, in honor of their yartzeit, 19 Av.
This women's class was presented on Tuesday Parshas Eikev, 19 Av, 5779, August 20, 2019 at the Ohr Chaim Shul, Monsey, NY.
The Jewish people are standing at the Eastern side of the Jordan river. They are poised to enter the Promised Land. Their faithful leader, Moshe, speaks to them. These are his words: "Hear, O Israel! Today, you are crossing the Jordan to come in to possess nations greater and stronger than you, great cities, fortified up to the heavens. A colossal and towering nation, the children of the giants, whom you know and of whom you have heard said, "Who can stand against the children of the giants?!"
This is mind-staggering. Moshe is repeating, almost verbatim, the words the Ten Spies uttered 39 years earlier which caused an unparalleled catastrophe, and derailed Jewish history from its course.
Is this for real? After everything they have been through, Moses repeats—as we said, almost verbatim—the terrifying and destructively-impactful words of the spies which sowed terror and dread in all of their brethren hearts!
It is here that we discover the truth of Torah. Judaism does not deny reality; it does not sell us the Brooklyn Bridge. It acknowledged the real fears internal and external hardships, but it also says: Hashem is with you; you can confront every fear. Life is difficult, but if you can accept that, then life can be a lot of fun!
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is a powerful tool, but sometimes it can fail you. It is then that you need another, very different tool -- articulated in this story of Eikev.
The lecture is based on an address by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Shabbos Parshas Eikev, 23 Av, 5731, August 14, 1971.

addiction
Same with addiction. Do not say it is nothing. No, it is terrifying, but I can do it.
Chazal say, “al tomar ei afshi, ela afshi umah eeseh.”
I think it may be giving the same message. I really would love to "eat the cake," and I can accept that, and stil abstain, because G-d is with me, and He does not want me to do this. It is a powerful solace. You need not deny the face that you really want to sin, and you can make space for it, and then do the right thing!
(The Maggid does says this is not true with a Baal Teshuvah, because "suro ra," he is someone who has fallen prey in the past.)
The idea is also true with children. When you hide real news, it often comes back to haunt. Tell them the truth and show the that they can handle it.

I again want to thank you for the lessons. I had been asked to bring the lesson Tuesday night to the group, and the lesson was "Battle Field of the Mind' so it was additionally exciting for me to hear your lesson, and of course, I incorporated some of the statements, e.g. the struggle, is real, life is difficult... but our G-d is a consuming fire, He goes before us, He fights the battles and we have the victory, so we need not fear, as He told commanded Joshua, not to fear...
So we can recognize and accept that life is difficult, but we don't have to 'own' it, or pretend otherwise. I saw the nods of agreement over the group of over 40, last night. So again, thank you.
Another situation that occurred was we had 'testimony' night last week Tuesday... One woman stood up and said, what helped her with the death of her son (from overdose), was when I mentioned the 'sensitivity of many of the addicts', the worlds 'cues' can be overwhelming for them, and their pain is intense because of the sensitivity...
This resounded with her because he was the most sensitive of her children, it helped her to get a glimpse into his world, and inturn helped her in the grieving process. This she was sayin to over to people. Many people were again nodding in agreement, as they were going through similar situations with their children. Just to show you how you are helping others, outside of your 'sphere of influence'.
I thought of walking up to Masada, with the sun beating down on your head, when you spoke about your arduous hike. It was a pleasure on arrival, but the walk was 'no joke'. Thanks for being a messenger.
