Does Hashem Really Need Me?

Dissecting a Difficult Rashi in Pinchas Comparing G-d to a Widower

1 hr 57 min

Class Summary:

Rabbi YY Jacobson presented this text-based class in Likkutei Sichos by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Parshas Pinchas, vol. 13. It explored a fascinating and perplexing Rashi in the Parsha, in which we compare Hashem to a widower and Moshe to a princess about to pass away.

The class was presented on Tuesday, Parshas Pinchas, 15 Tammuz, 5780, July 7, 2020, streaming live from Rabbi Jacobson's home in Monsey, NY

God does not need us. It says that clearly in Chavos Halevavos.

So Hashem needs me to suffer.  That's love for you.  If a parent punished his child like Hashem punishes us, he/she would either be in jail or executed.

I am so so sorry for all the pain. Yes it's not easy. I would suggest you watch my emunah series in which I addressed many of these questions. On theyeshiva.net you have the emunah series. I think it can be helpful.

I had read your essay on parshas pinchas  and I enjoyed it immensely but I had some questions on it. Just finished listening to the live sicha given on parshas pinchus in which it is an elaboration on the essay and I am blown away by the content and deyukim of the rebbi  and your presentation and ultimately its message. Very deep, profund and so essential.  A real gem of a shiur both emotionally and intellectualy. This sicha is tremendous  chizuk that we all need to internalize especially in today's current  events when spirits are so low to give us chizuk during this time.
Thank you so much for this shiur.

I was thrilled to see your little boy walking by the camera at the end of the Pinchas shuir on the Rashi re Hashem loving us as children akin in a sense to the unbreakability of parental love.

Yasher kochacha for the shuir !

And watching this beautiful KNH little boy taking a sneak peek at the Rabbi's work just reinforced everything the Rov was saying.

I was smiling and joyous no end!

I listen to you. Your shiurim on emuneh are fantastic.
If you dont mind, i want to share with you a zohar hakodosh that i saw.
The Zohar in Parshas מקץ explains, why did Hashem bring a famine to Egypt and the other countries. Says the Zohar, since Hashem promised אברהם אבינו that the yiden will go out of Egypt with loads of gelt- ואחרי כן יצאו ברכוש גדול. So Hashem bought a famine in order that all the countries should come and buy food from Egypt, in order that Egypt should be a rich country, all for the yiden when they will leave.
In other words, what looked to us like a famine, was really preparing money for the yiden!
Many people have problems with parnoso in this korona crisis. But we have to believe, that what looks to us like a famine, could be the source of the biggest solvation!!
    Thanks again

    The Complexity of Simplicity

    Thank you for this Shiur.
The Rebbe unpacked a Rashi and you ( R'YY ) unpacked the Sicha.

All too often we just plow through Rashi without either the ability or inclination to recognize that while Rashi is explaining P'Shat the depth and complexity of Rashi is awesome.

Similarly, the Sichos can be understood at many different levels -- and it is extremely appreciated to get a glimpse of the depths of a Sicha.

It is amazing to see how the Rebbe's analysis ( in his questions) examines Rashi at an atomic level, but in the Rebbe's analysis ( in the explanation/ answer section) is a panoramic view. However even the panoramic view is measured through every pixel.

It is sobering to see how the Rebbe saw global life lessons in what to many ( including myself) was just a Rashi explaining one verse.

    Once again thank you.

What's a little korban mincha to the One who made it all?

One point in the sicha is that Hashem desires and has pleasure from our daily (and other) korbonos (nowadays tefillas).

I always wondered. Hashem made the whole wide world. What's a korbon mincha or even a big bull as a  korban to Him?

Cain and Hevel brought korbonos not long after creation. One brought a big choice animal and one brought a cheap one.

All korbonos should be nothing to  Him. He made it all.  So what's the  difference? Why did He turn to one and not the other which created animosity and even led to fratricide?

Imagine a parent gives his kids a huge pile of nash.  Then he asks for some back. As a test. (I've done this, its interesting). One kid gladly hands some back while the other refuses.

So too with Cain and Hevel.

So too with the korbonos in the mishkan and  the Beis Hamigdash. Hashem doesn't need our korbonos. In fact Yeshayahu says in the haftorah of Shabbos Chazon that Hashem detests even perfect korbonos if the offerors has neglected the underprivileged classes.

Hashem knows how much a korban mincha or a bull costs. He knows what each can afford. Perhaps he doesn't care about the korban per se, but rather our effort to bring it and the amount we are willing to  sacrifice to bring it to the One who, after all, created it all.

Moshe the Tatty asking for a good replacement after he's gone

Did he forget  that the whole golus mitzrayim was promised by Hashem to Avraham? Did he forget that Hashem chose him as the the one to lead the yidden out of golus? Did he forget that Hashem loves the yidden at least as much as Moshe and even before Moshe was born  and certainly after he's gone?

In truth Hashrm could have taken the  yidden out of golus mitzrayim without any human leader, including Moshe, and done the job Himself. Obviously just as He wants us to be partners with Him in general (the idea behind a bris), He wished to have a partner for the geula.

So why was Moshe concerned? Did Avraham ask "who will take them out of that future golus you describe after I'm gone?" Ditto for Yakov on his deathbed.

We are always told to have emunah and bitichon that Hashem is in charge and will do what is right? Of course we must do our part to the extent we can, and daven, but ultimately it's up to Him.

      WHERE WAS MOSHE'S BITOCHON?

This is dicsussed in the following:

One could add by the korban tamid we have a drasha במועדו ואפילו בטומאה that even when we are in the state of impurity and we feel down and worthless and insigninficant and rejected - Hasehm tells us I still need my bread, I still need you, even through all that you are going through and you keep stumbling that will not change my love and relationship with you. This is very much connceted to the other Maamar in Parshas Matos Massei discussing arrogance that when one approaches the service of Hashem one needs a little arrogance to realize his significance and how important his service is in the eyes of Hashem. Not to approach his service thinking who am I to serve Hashem . Such a thought comes from the yetzer harah who blinds a person to focus on the ideas brought out by this Mammar that we are his children and tied with a an everlasting knot to be bound together with Hashem.

{ The idea the Rebbe makes is found in the great Mussar sefarim, for example, in Rabenu Yonah in Yesod Hateshuva

Smiliarly in Mesilas Yesharim (19) regarding Davening:

Does the Rebbe discuss this drasha of במועדו ואפילו בטומאה  in any of his sichos?

    Listened to the entire shiur

What I got out of it is HE wants to have a relationship with us for both of our benefits, For us to experience HIM and for HIM to see how happy that makes us when we truly connect. Had to think about the words before posting.  And wanted to let you know that after all of the Rashi and the moshel and the King and the husband and all of it that is what I came up with. Wanted to let you know and to thank you for that realization.
